Incentive and gamification… different approaches to achieve a similar goal 🎮 💎 🎯

Incentives and gamification are similar in that they both aim to motivate people to take a certain action, that will help us (as POs) reach Goals or KPIs, such as LTV, Increase in revenue, or Preventing Churn.

However, there are some key differences between the two, and when we set our strategy it’s important to understand it.

Incentives typically involve offering a reward in a form of an item or any asset your product offers for achieving a specific pre-defined goal, but can also be a physical reward.

For example, an employer might offer a cash bonus to employees who meet a certain sales target.

The rational behind this, is to give a motivation to excel by providing a clear “do-get” approach, for your desired action,or if it is in your product, the motivation to get the reward.

Gamification, on the other hand, is the use of game-like elements and mechanics in non-game contexts, this can be in challenges, leaderboards, or any other type of competition.

For example, a website might use gamification techniques to make completing certain tasks more engaging and fun, this can also be in a “do-get” approach, however, it can be prolonged in a well familiar form of getting points to “level-Up”.

For Gamification, the rationale is that it taps into the customers\clients\players natural desire for challenge and competition.

As it grows in popularity, and is now common not only in games, setting up the right strategy from day 1 to reach your goals, is super important.

In the pic below, my 5-year-old son created an incentive board for himself, where if all is positive (daily behavior), he’ll get something sweet on the weekend (don’t tell him, but he’ll get it anyway).

Those stickers, by the way, are a form of gamification…
